What causes teeth spacing?
Most of the time, teeth spacing or gaps do not have a specific cause. Sometimes tooth spacing is genetic. Some people are predisposed to having spacing. Other times it can be caused by an environmental factor such as a habit like finger-sucking or a tongue thrust. Some people have thick bands of gum tissue called frenums that can cause gaps in the front teeth.
Does spacing get worse over time?
It can! As we get older, our teeth do continue to shift. If any teeth are lost, teeth can drift and spaces can get bigger. With or without orthodontic treatment, teeth continue to move when we are adults. This is why we recommend retainers after all orthodontic treatment.
What is the best way to treat teeth spacing?
There are many orthodontic options to fix teeth spacing. At Vac Orthodontics, we offer many different treatment options including braces (both clear and metal braces) as well as clear aligners (such as Invisalign or ClearCorrect). After the spacing is corrected, you will need orthodontic retainers to prevent any relapse of the crowding. In rare cases, some patients might need additional gum procedures to prevent the space from reopening.
How long does it take to fix teeth spacing?
Treatment with braces or Invisalign does vary based on the individual. It can vary from just a few months in minor tooth spacing cases to over a year in certain spacing cases. If you have a gap between the front teeth (called a diastema), we usually recommend a permanent or fixed retainer after the spaces are closed. This just prevents the space from reopening after your orthodontic treatment has ended.
